MySql, PHP, dates and times

Over  the weekend I was writing some PHP code and got into all sorts of bother with trying to compare two dates, one from PHP and the other from a database stored field in MySql. What I wanted to do was this: retrieve each record from the database, and check if a certain DateTime field was greater than 20 minutes ago. A standard and easy thing to be trying to do you would think. Not for me it wasn’t.

Wildlife Focus chat feature

I’m currently working on a chat feature for the Wildlife Focus site, which is run by the World Land Trust. Since this is a charitable organisation doing great work, naturally I am doing this for free.

The initial requirement is to allow registered users to be able to post comments on the webcams that are being displayed, allowing them to discuss what they see etc. In the future it will be integrated with PHPmotion, which the site uses to show user uploaded videos, allowing live discussions.

I’ve only started it, but have got quite far already. It’s being built with PHP, AJAX, MySql and of course HTML and CSS. I’ll keep you updated on how it’s going.

Business card websites

As you probably know, when I redesigned iandevlin.com it was inspired by an article I read in .net magazine about business card websites.

Today I found a showcase of some fantastic sites that follow this design. There are some truly wonderful site designs there, well worth a look!

Nice translator

Just found a great online tool for translating words into different languages called Nice Translator. I love the simplicity of the design and layout which all contribute to its ease of use

IKEA delivery service

Yesterday we took delivery of a new bed (Malm) from IKEA and I simply cannot praise their delivery service highly enough.

Ordered online last Sunday, we were told that it would be delivered the following Saturday, the 10th October, and that a day beforehand we would receive a time window when it would be delivered and then a phone call an hour before it turned up. So on Friday a SMS was duly received informing us that they would be there between 10am and 1pm, and at a quarter past 9 on the Saturday morning, they did indeed call to say that they were on their way. They called a few minutes later to ask for directions as they got lost, but the two delivery guys were very polite, helpful and friendly and the whole thing was up in the flat in no time at all.

I then had fun dismantling the old bed and putting this one together (not).

Hats off you to IKEA for such a great service!
