HTML5 Video and Background Images
Stack Overflow can be a great place to get the mind going and this evening was no exception. A question was posted asking how to get a HTML5 video’s poster image to fill the element if its aspect ration differs.

In a recent email conversation with Slava Paperno of Cornell University who builds applications for language teachers, he brought something to my attention that I was unaware of. Namely that HTML5 audio and video also accept Data URIs as a source, as well as standard file URLs.
When I was putting together my post on responsive HTML5 video last week, it led me to investigate the media attribute of the source element a bit further.
It would appear that the poster attribute for the video element in the HTML5 specification needs some clarification to further define required behaviour.
Here’s why.
My book HTML5 Multimedia: Develop and Design is finally published and available at all good online book stores. Naturally times of availability in different countries and stores varies slightly (e.g. here in the UK), but overall the book is out.
Yes. It’s true. I’m writing a book! Somehow I have become a technical author. Well I know how it’s come about, but it still seems rather surreal.
The topic is HTML5 Multimedia, and it’s part of the new Design and Develop series by Peachpit, and in it I shall be talking about all things related to multimedia and HTML5.
